After 3 years of racing solo weekend Ace Races, Simon Coppen-Gardner decided it was time to do some team racing. He chose what turned out to be the last Blue Eskimo ever and spent 2 months desparately trying to find enough people for a mixed 4 person team of medium experience. The result was 2 teams, one experienced which he captained and one made up of newbies, captained by Paul Hopkins.
Over the winter of 2001/02 talk of a club was rife and in February the first social night was held. Only 4 people turned up but momentum was gathering and new people were asking for help finding teams almost every day. By the time the first Trailplus came around in early May, the club had 8 full teams and a pair entered.
Things have just gone from strength to strength throughout the year for us, successfully introducing new people to Adventure Racing at every race that passed. The high point of the year was definitely the final Ford Ranger at Bracknell Forest, where we fielded 8 or more club teams and had over 30 members in attendance. On top of this Team Huntsman (Anthony Emmet, Pip Roberts & David Graham) had started the race 3rd of only 5 teams entitled to compete for the series title. At the end of a fantastically hot and sweaty race they had clawed back enough time from the team above them to place themselves 2nd behind Waddenhoe High Five. A brilliant result for 3 people that had never tried AR before this year. In addition to this club teams finished 4th, 5th & 6th and Mel Humphreys was kind enough to award Debbie Smit and her team a special spot prize for being the first of the Spiders teams.
So, one year on from conception our humble little club has grown from 8 people to around 150 and we have 10 members racing and supporting at the first ever British Championships.
What will our second year bring? Well, we will have to spend the winter months planning and looking forward to what else we can achieve. However, our original goal remains the same - to provide a sociable and fun group within which people can be introduced to Adventure Racing and their growth within the sport to whatever level they wish can be supported.
If you don't know where to start on your journey into AR or want to join a race when none of your friends are available, drop us a line.
